Supabase
Open-source Firebase alternative with Postgres at the core
Supabase provides a full backend-as-a-service built on Postgres, including auth, real-time subscriptions, storage, edge functions, and pgvector for AI embeddings. It is the fastest way to build data-driven apps.
Editor rating is our overall editorial judgment of the tool, out of 5. It is not a test score and not a user-review average. Ratings have not been re-scored since the tool was listed here. The reasons are in Best for and Pros & cons below.
Requires some technical comfort with API keys, command line, or coding. If you're new to AI, start with a chat-based tool first.

Create a project
Sign in to the Supabase Dashboard and create a new project. A project gives you a Postgres database, a place to store rows of data.
Add a sample table
Open the SQL Editor and run the quickstart's snippet. It creates a table called instruments holding violin, viola and cello, plus a rule that lets anyone read it.
Show the data in an app
Run npx create-next-app@latest my-app -e with-supabase and add your Project URL and Publishable key. The quickstart's instruments page then lists the three rows.
If you land on sign-in
The with-supabase template sends signed-out visitors to the sign-in page. Change lib/supabase/proxy.ts so it skips that redirect for the instruments page.
