File ManagementArchived

Google Drive

Search, read, and manage files in Google Drive with support for Docs, Sheets, and PDF export.

Overview

A Google Drive connection lets your AI assistant search your Drive and read the contents of files: Google Docs become plain text, Sheets become tables it can reason about. That means you can ask "find my notes from the March planning meeting and summarize the decisions" without digging through folders yourself.

The reference server, @modelcontextprotocol/server-gdrive, was archived in 2025 and is no longer maintained. For most people the better path today is Claude's built-in Google Drive connector. On claude.ai and in Claude Desktop you enable it under Settings → Connectors and sign in with Google; no server to run at all. The archived server still works if you want a local, self-hosted option, but it requires setting up your own Google Cloud credentials and gets no updates. Either way, access is read-only: the assistant can search and read, not edit or delete your files.

Instructions

npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-gdrive

Prefer the native connectorOn claude.ai or Claude Desktop, open Settings → Connectors, enable Google Drive, and sign in with your Google account. This is maintained, takes two minutes, and needs no credentials files. Only continue below if you specifically want the self-hosted archived server.
Create Google Cloud credentials (self-hosted route)In the Google Cloud Console, create a project, enable the Google Drive API, and create OAuth client credentials for a desktop app. Download the JSON file and note its location. The server reads it via the GDRIVE_CREDENTIALS_PATH environment variable.
Authenticate onceRun npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-gdrive auth. A browser window opens for Google sign-in; approving it saves a token locally so the server can read your Drive afterwards without asking again.
Connect and testAdd the server to claude_desktop_config.json with command "npx", args ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-gdrive"], and GDRIVE_CREDENTIALS_PATH in env. Restart, then ask: "Search my Drive for files about onboarding."

Starter recipes

Real tasks you can ask an agent once this server is connected.

Summarize meeting notes

Ask for last month's meeting docs on a topic and get a single summary of the decisions and open questions across all of them.

Try

Pull numbers from a Sheet

Point it at a budget or tracking spreadsheet and ask plain-English questions (totals, trends, which rows look off) without writing formulas.

Try

Find the right document fast

Describe a file you half-remember ("the proposal with the three pricing tiers") and have it search, identify the likely match, and quote the relevant section.

Try

Install

npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-gdrive

Archived: no longer maintained, no security updates (archive notice).

Runs on your computer. Your AI client starts it with npx when it needs it.
