Connect to PostgreSQL databases for schema inspection, read-only queries, and data analysis with connection pooling.

Overview

A Postgres MCP server lets your AI assistant look inside a PostgreSQL database (a common system for storing structured data, like customer records or sales) and answer questions about it. You can ask things like "how many orders came in last week?" and the assistant writes and runs the SQL query for you, then explains the result in plain English.

The original reference server, @modelcontextprotocol/server-postgres, was archived in 2025 and is no longer maintained. Good current options include Postgres MCP Pro (a community server focused on safe, read-only analysis), and the official Neon or Supabase MCP servers if your database is hosted there. Whichever you pick, run it in read-only mode first: the assistant can then look at data but never change or delete anything.

Pick a maintained serverThe archived reference server still runs but gets no fixes. For a plain Postgres database, use Postgres MCP Pro (uvx postgres-mcp). If your database lives on Neon or Supabase, use their official MCP servers instead. They handle login for you.
Get your connection stringYou need a database URI that looks like postgres://user:password@host:5432/dbname. Ask whoever runs your database for a read-only user, or create one. Set it as the DATABASE_URI environment variable rather than pasting it into chat.
Add it to your clientIn Claude Desktop, edit claude_desktop_config.json and add an entry with command "uvx", args ["postgres-mcp", "--access-mode=restricted"], and DATABASE_URI in env. In Claude Code, run: claude mcp add postgres -e DATABASE_URI=... -- uvx postgres-mcp --access-mode=restricted. The install line on this page is copied from the project README, which uses --access-mode=unrestricted. That mode lets the assistant change data, so swap in --access-mode=restricted to keep it read-only.
Run a first testRestart the client, then ask: "What tables exist in this database?" The assistant should list your table names. If it errors, the connection string or network access to the database is usually the problem.
